The Essentials We Believe
-
The sole basis of our belief is the Bible, composed of the 66 books of the Old and New Testaments (The Scriptures) which we believe to be God’s complete and sufficient revelation, therefore carry God’s authority for the total well-being of mankind. It was written by human authors, under the supernatural guidance of the Holy Spirit. Therefore, Scripture speaks with the authority of God and reflects the backgrounds, styles, and vocabularies of the human authors. Because it is inspired by God, it is the truth and without error in their original writings (2 Timothy 3:16; Psalm 12:6; 119:97-104, 105, 160; Proverbs 30:5; 2 Timothy 3:15-16).
-
We believe in one true and living God, eternally existing in three persons- Father, Son, and Holy Spirit- each of whom equally possess all the attributes of deity and personhood and are worthy of precisely the same respect, confidence, and obedience (Matthew 28:19; John 14:10; 2 Corinthians 13:14).
-
God is the creator and supreme ruler of the universe, the heavens, the earth and all things therein. By his power, he continues to sustain his creation, and by his providence, he is operating throughout history to fulfill his redemptive purposes (Genesis 1:1; Revelation 4:11; Psalm 90:2)
-
We believe that the Lord Jesus Christ, the eternal Son of God, became man without ceasing to be God, having been conceived of the Holy Spirit and born of a virgin. He offered himself as a substitute in our place, voluntarily, as a sinless sacrifice on the cross, thereby satisfying God's righteous judgment against sin. After substantiating the accomplishment of that redemption by his bodily resurrection from the grave, he ascended to the right hand of his Father where he intercedes on behalf of those who trust Him (John 1:1, 14, 18; 14:8,9; Acts 1:3, 9; Hebrews 7:25-26; 1 Timothy 3:16).
-
We believe that God the Spirit is the third person of the Trinity. The ministry of the Holy Spirit is to glorify the Lord Jesus Christ. He enlightens the minds of sinners, awakens in them the recognition of their need for a Savior, and spiritually regenerates them. At the moment of salvation, he permanently indwells every believer, baptizing (or placing) them into the one true church, which is the body of Christ. The Holy Spirit guides, instructs, fills, comforts and empowers the believer for godly living. He seals them for the day of redemption, grants spiritual gifts upon them, and fills those who are yielded to Him. (John 16:13-14; John 16:8-11; Mark 13:11; John 14:26; Romans 5:5; 1 Corinthians 3:16).
-
People are made in the spiritual image of God, to be like Him in character (Genesis 1:27). God created man and woman, as He said it was not good for man to be alone (Genesis 2:7, 18, 22). We believe that marriage was first instituted by God in the order of creation, to be between one man and one woman (Genesis 2:24). Originally created by God to have fellowship with God. Man defied God, choosing to go his own independent way (sin). As a result, man was separated from God and suffered the corruption of his nature, rendering him unable to please God. This fall of the human race took place at the beginning of human history, and all individuals since have suffered these consequences and are thus in need of the saving grace of God (Genesis 3:1-6; Isaiah 53:6a; Romans 1:18,32, 3:10-18; Isaiah 59:1-2).
-
We believe that the Lord Jesus Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, as a representative and substitutionary sacrifice. Salvation is the gift of God's grace, and is not the result, in whole or in part, of human works of goodness. All who personally receive Him as personal Savior, through repentance and faith in the saving work of Jesus Christ on the cross are forgiven their sins and born into the family of God by the regenerating work of the Holy Spirit and thereby has assurance of salvation as a child of God. We believe the Holy Spirit baptizes each believing person into the body of Christ at the moment of salvation and that there is no second baptism of the Holy Spirit (Ephesians 2:8-9; 2 Corinthians 5:21; 1 Corinthians 12:13).
-
There is one true universal church which consists of all those who acknowledge Jesus Christ as Savior and Lord. The Scripture commands believers to gather to devote themselves to worship, prayer, the teaching of the Word, the observance of baptism and communion, fellowship, service to the body of believers through the development and use of talents and spiritual gifts, and outreach to the world in fulfillment of the command of Christ to make disciples of all believers. Wherever God’s people meet regularly in obedience to this command, there is the local expression of the church under the oversight of elders and other supportive leadership. The church’s members are to work together in love and unity, intent on the ultimate purpose of glorifying Christ (Acts 2:42-46; 1 Corinthians 14:26; Matthew 28:18-20; Ephesians 4:16).
-
We believe that our Lord Jesus Christ instituted two ordinances to be observed by believers until His return, baptism and the Lord’s Supper, also known as Communion. We believe that Christian baptism by water is a public identification with Jesus Christ in His death, burial and resurrection. Although baptism is not required for salvation, it is commanded of all believers and is for believers only. Scripture shows that a person was baptized after personally receiving forgiveness of sin through accepting Jesus Christ. The waters of baptism are a symbol of our death, burial and resurrection to newness of life that happens when we become a new creation in Christ (Matthew 28:19-20; Acts 2:38,41; Romans 6:1-4).
Communion is the commemoration by believers of Christ’s death and a reminder – through the bread and the juice – of the Saviors broken body and shed blood. Communion is to be a time of confession of our sin and should be preceded by careful self-examination (1 Corinthians 11:20-29).
-
We believe that the life of the believer is to be separated from worldliness by consistent conduct before God and man, and is at the same time to be in the world as life-giving light, bearing fruit to the glory of God the Father. It is possible for the believer to lead such a life of Christ-like character when he appropriates the power and control of the indwelling Holy Spirit by faith (Matthew 5:16).
-
Death seals the eternal destiny of each person. For all mankind, there will be a resurrection of the body into the spiritual world and a judgment that will determine the fate of each individual. Unbelievers will be separated from God into eternal torment in Hell. God’s judgment will reveal his justice in consigning them to the eternal perpetuation of their own choice to reject him. Believers will be received into eternal communion with God and will be rewarded for works done in this life. (Matthew 25:34; John 14:2; 2 Corinthians 5:1; Revelation 2:7). We believe in the imminent, personal and visible return of the Lord Jesus Christ to earth, to fulfill the eternal plan of God. His return has a vital bearing on the personal life and service of the believer (1 Thessalonians 4:13-18).
-
Satan and his demonic servants viciously oppose the work God performs in and through His people. God, who by His nature is infinitely more powerful than Satan, indue time will have complete and total victory over Satan (1 Peter 5:8; Ephesians 6:12; 1 John 4:4). It is appropriate to pray in Jesus’ name for protection against demonic activity, and also the Scriptures instruct the Christian to combat Satan by:
• Humbly drawing near to God, knowing that He will give grace, mercy and strength (Hebrews 4:15-16; James 4:8; 1 Peter 5:6-10).
• Resisting his temptations (James 4:7).
• Rightly applying the truth of the Scriptures (Matthew 4:1-11).
• Forgiving offenses (2 Corinthians 2:10-11).
• Putting on the armor of God’s truth, righteousness, readiness to share the Gospel, faith, salvation, and prayer (Ephesians 6:11-18).
• Demonstrating faithfulness to the Lord by enduring trials (James 1:2-4).
